  • Candidates will assist each other during transfer of datum levels and installation of pre- fabricated ducts;
  • Candidates are to assemble the ducting system using “TDF” with gaskets and “C&S” drive clips as indicated on the test drawings;
  • Hanger rods for the ducting system are to be installed onto the timber ceiling structure in correct alignments, positions and verticality;
  • Fabricate 2 sections of duct work in accordance to drawings using at least 2 “Pittsburgh” seams, which shall be sealed with sealant;
  • Connect self-fabricated ducts to pre-fabricated duct using “S&C” drive clips;
  • Connect and secure flexible duct to ceiling diffuser (fixed at correct position & level) and self-fabricated duct;
  • Candidates should be able to complete the installation in safe working manner, and complying to correct orientation, levels, verticality, tolerances, application of screws, etc.;

Scope of Training/Assessment

  • Basic principles of air- conditioning and mechanical ventilation;
  • Fabrication of ducts and fixing of support brackets;
  • Fabrication and Distribution of Refrigerant Pipework;
  • Safety;
  • 2 days (8.30am-5.30pm)
  • Trainees will be briefed on BCA Assessment Criteria for Test Project;
  • Trainers will provide detailed explanation on how to interpret the test drawing and how to relate the drawing to the actual test bays, the correct sequence and method to install the various ducting components in accordance to test drawings and specifications;
  • Test candidates are expected to ensure cleanliness of workplace during test, observing safety, proper use of tools, and operate machines in a safe manner;
  • All fabrication and installation are to comply with the SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association Inc) standards;
  • In accordance to individual candidate’s project profiles, candidates will learn how to mark out the duct profile at ground level and project the hanger rods positions onto the ceiling for installation of the brackets for hanger rods;
  • Candidates will install the pre-fabricated ducts onto the installed hanger rods with the help of a buddy from the same test class (helping out in material transfer only). The prefabricated ducts will be installed using “C&S” clips, with full gasket installed in- between the TDF flanges;
  • Candidates will be taught on the fabrication of new ducts using galvanized sheet metal, from marking out of duct profiles on the galvanized sheet, cutting out of duct profile, forming of Pittsburgh lock seams, fixing of drive clip, fabrication of end-cap for new duct, application of sealant to Pittsburgh seams after assembly;
  • Candidates will learn the correct method of installing the flexible duct between the fabricated duct and the air-con diffuser;
  • Hanger rods are to be used sufficiently and installed with proper verticality, with all bolts and nuts properly fastened;
  • Positioning tolerance of the installed duct works shall be within ± 10mm;
  • Trainees will hands on the sample practical project in accordance to what have been taught by the trainers, with close guidance and monitoring from the trainers during the course of their practices;
  • At the end of the training, trainees should be able to install the duct works in accordance to test drawings and test specifications within the test duration of 4 hrs;
  • Candidates will be advised to take up more practical trainings prior to the test if they are unable to meet the training expectations after the 2 days training.

Remarks

    • suitable for workers with prior knowledge in air- conditioning system;
    • workers without prior knowledge will need to take up additional practical classes to acquire the necessary skills in duct fabrications and
    • candidates must passed both written and practical test to be qualified as CoreTrade Foreman status and obtain SEC(K) qualification;
